About Michael

"I have spent my entire adult life and professional career here in Lakeland. We are fortunate to have citizens who are passionate about this City's future; I hope to lead the City forward while not ignoring the importance of preserving those parts of our community that we cherish, have grown to love and are vital to Lakeland’s future."

Michael Tamney was born and raised in Temple Terrace, Florida. A graduate of King High School, he was a two-year letterman and captain on the varsity wrestling team and a drummer with the King High Marching Lions. Upon graduating high school, he left for Charleston, South Carolina to fulfill one of his dreams of becoming a Citadel Cadet. After graduating from The Citadel with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1994, Tamney pursued his ambition by beginning his 18-year career with Smith Barney (now Morgan Stanley) in Lakeland, Florida. He currently is Second Vice President of Investments and a Financial Planning Specialist with the Johnson Tamney Group at Morgan Stanley. Tamney and his team work with individuals and businesses in areas such as estate planning, asset allocation and retirement planning.  Daily interaction with his diverse client base gives him a unique perspective of many of the challenges facing families, retirees and business owners. Tamney says he will bring those experiences and his expertise to the City Commission to maintain a balanced perspective while applying logic, analytical thinking and a common sense approach to the issues.

Tamney and his wife Reema met in Lakeland and they celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary last September.

Current Community Roles

Giving back was instilled in Tamney at an early age by his parents. It is no surprise that he has been an active member of the Lakeland community holding seats on committees and boards with non-profit organizations, such as:
